The graceful Rhine Hessen is regarding as ‘The area of thousands hills’

In the last two decades, Rhine Hessen as the biggest producing area, no matter its wine quality or its area image promotion both have great development. Now the 26,500 hectare planting area is one of ‘the most vigorous’ areas. Because lots of wine maker, especially the young, well-educated generation have realized the potential value of their vineyard and utilized their professional knowledge for their cellar and vineyard.

The area between Mainz, Worms, Alzey and Bingen is the grape planting area just look like the green ocean waves, among the vineyard located lots of beautiful villages. Rhine Hessen has the lowest forest coverage rate because of its developed agricultural economy. Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis mountain , Taunus, Odenwald and the north Pfalz mountain land together protect the Hessen area from the invasion of cold climate and heavy rainfall. Therefore, this area is the driest and warmest area and particularly suitable for grape and fruit planting.

The Soil property of Rhine Hessen consists of quartzite, porphyry, slate and pelelith, and the soil property also has the feature of Tertiary period sedimentary soil. The diversified soil and the supplement of red soil form very marvelous rock composition which is much older than the Tertiary period sedimentary soil. The soil of east producing area, near the Rhine River, the soil around so called ‘Rheinterrasse’ Nierstein town and the soil near Nierstein town are all this kind of soil. Thanks to the soil structure and the diversified climate, farmer can harvest different kinds of grapes, sometimes a farmer can harvest more than thirty kinds of grapes each year for brewing wine.

Wine culture

The proportion of white grape is 69%, and red grape is 31%. Rhine Hessen area plant Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir, and its traditional grape is Silvaner, so Rhine Hessen also have the biggest cultivated area of Silvaner in the world. Among the red grape, there are Dornfelder, Pinot Noir and Portugieser. ‘Chateau sparkling wine’ is brewed strictly as per the standard traditional Methode Champenoise; ‘Region sparkling wine’ was first named in Rhine Hessen thirty years ago.

Mainz city is not only the main city of Rhine Hessen but also the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz state. Starting from 2008 it became a proud member of Great Wine Capitals Global Network which is an alliance for promoting the tourism and the culture of wine. Nine of the most important wine producing cities is its members: Bordeaux, Florenz, San Francisco, Christchurch, Bilbao, Mendoza, Porto, Cape Town and Mainz.
